Phil Harris Is An Old-Time Radio Legend
The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show was the show that made Phil Harris a household name in old time radio.
Phil grew up in Nashville, TN and was born in Indiana. In the 1920s he began his career as a drummer, which later led to the development of his own band in the 1930s.
His career also spanned the film industry. He made a film in 1933 called So This is Harris for RKO. His film went on to win the Oscar for best live action short subject.
Harris joined the Jack Benny Show in 1936 as the show’s new director of music. The band had him as their lead and he also sang. Furthermore, he also starred as a comical Southerner in a speaking role on the show. During this stint, he gained a following for his musical and comedic talents. At the same time he began recording swing tunes with unusual arrangements that made his music really stand out from the crowd.
He would eventually marry Alice Faye in 1941, and would continue to be married to her for over 50 years. While it was the 2nd marriage for the couple, they knew in each other that this time they found the right person. Fitch Bandwagon eventually invited the couple to perform.
On the show, they gained a greater success of their own, eventually meaning the show they joined became their own outright, known as the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show.
Each episode featured a song from the two and the show was also reformatted as a comedy. As the show gained great popularity, it ran for 6 years. The last episode of the show aired in 1954. At this time old time radio shows were becoming obsolete and the television age was dawning.
Harris maintained his musical career connection long after the original radio show ended. Starring in many television productions, Harris also did much voice over work for Disney classic The Jungle Book and The Aristocats, as Baloo and Thomas O’Malley respectively.
The places where Harris grew up and had his first big breaks were not forgotten by Harris, as he donated a lot to the students of his hometown Linton, and even Palm Springs, where he grew up as a young aspiring performer. A lot of his merchandise was handed over to the Linton Public Library, and it can still be found there. He died of a heart attack in 1995 at 91 years of age. Wife Alice Faye would survive him for another 3 years.
