Changing diapers is one of the first things a new mum has to learn. While most parents take it for granted, some find it a not so nice task that has to be performed on a baby. Since this is a task that has to be performed regardless of mums and dads feelings, by learning to do it properly and with expertise will make it just another day to day chore that has to be done for baby for quite sometime.
Before you start changing diapers, its essential to have all the items ready at hand. A new diaper, baby wipes, powder, cream and a new set of clothes are what you will require at this stage. Never leave baby alone while you go searching for this and that because its not safe to leave baby by herself for whatever reason.
Changing diapers is a job that is best done on a firm and steady surface such as a changing table or even on the floor if its clean and disinfected. Have a clean diaper ready before you remove the one baby is wearing and place it in the trash bag. Next you must wipe babys bottom using a front to back motion in order to prevent bacteria from causing any infection in babys urinary tract. If you think an accident can happen while changing diapers, its best to leave baby on a clean diaper before removing the soiled one.
The next act in changing diapers is to apply some baby cream or powder to babys bottom. This is sure to make her feel fresh and nice. With there being hundreds of baby lotions, creams and powders in the market, any well known baby product would do and a cheap one can do the same job as a more expensive product could with most probably only the outer packaging creating the difference in price. If you can leave baby without anything on for a little while, it will be so much better than fixing the diaper immediately after cleaning.
A mum should always find the time to interact with baby by showering her with love and kisses. This is essential to form that very important bond between mum and baby. The time taken for changing diapers is ideal for such interaction where mum can sing to baby and play with her. Never show her your irritation because even little babies are quick to sense displeasure. Once baby is clean and smelling fresh and nice, the new diaper can be fixed in a way that it does not cause any leaks and yet is not too tight to make it uncomfortable for baby.
Cleaning up after changing diapers is very important. Before getting rid of the soiled diaper, use the fasteners to criss-cross it and fasten it securely before placing it in the trash. Mums of today are lucky to have ready-made diapers that have made life so much easier for them. Gone are the days when cloth diapers had to be fastened with safety pins where new mums had to be very careful to ensure that the pins did not open up and hurt babys soft skin. With time, mums and even dads get used to changing diapers and do it even without thinking about it. After all, your baby depends on you to keep him comfortable and happy, and you owe it to the little one to make sure you change diapers the correct way.
