It is easy to go out and buy everything that your new baby might need. It's also one of the excitement of being pregnant. Browsing the Net for items you've never purchased before. A cot, a change mat, diapers, bottle warmers, the list can be endless.
But money isn't endless, and neither is space in your home.
Babies are dear and take up each bit of space you have - so you need to be reasonable.
The best thing to do is write a list! Consider what you really need, consider what your baby will actually need. There is another very important point too. As long as your baby has everything they actually NEED for the 1st few weeks after they are born, you should purchase anything else as you go along.
So here is our information for what you actually need to buy:
You'll need a auto seat if you plan on taking your baby anywhere by car, and a pram for traveling by foot or public transport and do not forget a rain-cover!
Your baby will need somewhere to sleep. They actually must not sleep with you, regardless of how tantalizing this might be - it is not safe. So you will need a crib, cot, carry cot or Moses basket - the choice is yours. All of them have benefits, the choice will come down to cash and space! Do not forget bedding, 4 sheet and 2 lightweight blankets are generally all you will need.
You can really go over board with bathing kit. All you actually need is a baby bath, flannels and towels, and some mild baby wash. The single thing to remember is about equipment for washing is to but keep the towels for your infant's use only.
What kind of diapers do you intend on using? If you select reusable nappies you might get tired of having to wash them, or a washing service might prove too costly. They're better for the environment though. You'll need the nappies, nappy pins and liners, plastic pants and a bucket to put used nappies in. With throwaway diapers all you actually need is the nappies. For either sort of nappy you'll need a bag to put everything in for when you go out. And you'll need baby wipes or cotton wool when you're changing you baby's nappy.
Remember baby bottles, nipples and caps if you're going to bottle feed. You may also need sterilising hardware, and child formula. These are all things to buy before a baby is born
Is it going to be summer or winter when your baby is born. The attire they require will really rely on this. So will how large your baby is when they are born. Aside from the absolute necessities - attire is truly better purchased after your baby is born. (Buddies and relatives tend to buy attire as a present for your child as well - so this could keep the clothing cost down) As a rule, they will need 6 baby-grows, 4 vests, 2 cardigans and a blanket. Do not forget a hat, mittens, socks for going out in cold weather. For bright weather, keep them as cool as you can, out of the direct sun and make sure they've got a sun hat.
