Is it a Good Idea to Live With Your Adult Child?

Thanks to the recession, plenty of people are having a hard time getting by. One of your adult children may even hit hard times, but should you consider letting him or her move back home? Before you and your partner decide, you will need to discuss it with each other.

First, you both have to take into account why your child may be forced to move back home. If they suffered an injury or lost their job because of lay-offs, then it would truly be the right thing to do. You may want to teach your child a real world lesson if they’re simply lazy.

It’s also possible that your child has other options. Your child should be able to afford to get their own place if they’re holding down a job. Getting a roommate to live with them is also another option so they’ll have someone to help pay bills.

Obviously, you’ll also need to think about whether you have enough space to accommodate another adult in the home. If worst comes to worst, then your child may be forced to sleep on the couch.

Before you decide to let your child move back in, you need to reach an agreement on the length of time they’ll stay. It’s best not to let them move in for an undetermined amount of time. If you aren’t careful, you’ll have a permanent houseguest.

If your child doesn’t have a job, then they probably won’t be able to contribute to the household. You’ll have someone else to be responsible for feeding once they move in. You and your partner may have a difficult time paying the additional expenses.

Once you’ve come to the decision to let your child stay, then you’ll at least need to come up with a few rules to live by. You and your spouse may even want to charge your adult rent in order to stay there. Assigning chores is also a good idea, especially if your child can’t help out around the home financially.

Letting their child move back in is a huge decision for most parents. You may be forced to let them move in if they have no other options. Just make sure that everyone can agree on a set of rules to live by. Doc No. 34Sdlhgsdl -sds
