A Growing Epidemic – Obesity In Teenagers And Children
Press coverage is something that childhood obesity has been getting a lot of for a long time. But this has made almost no difference, even in the US where it has reached epidemic proportions.
We are not here to discuss how it happens or who is to blame as we all know what the causes are. In a child’s later years this obesity or even just being overweight can have major health risks that can even be life-threatening. Physical and psychological areas are suffering in a noticeable percentage of this entire generation. The teen years are difficult enough to endure, we all remember, without having to endure the brutality of their peers just because they are overweight. As an obese child, they may have to face some of the following problems.
Yes, we mentioned Type II diabetes because it is right up there as a real possibility for obese children, teens and adults. It’s not a mystery why this condition develops in these situations. Type II is different from Type I in that sometimes Type II diabetes can be prevented. Type II diabetes is most often caused by obesity and other weight related issues and a prolonged sedentary existence. What happens with those who are obese is the extra demand placed on the body to produce more insulin. There is obviously an much greater amount that has to receive it. Then, in time the body simply becomes resistant to insulin and Type II occurs. Widespread research has proven that kids who suffer from obesity are far more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than kids who aren’t obese. This condition is very serious because what happens is the airway actually becomes blocked during sleep. Obese and overweight children are more prone to snoring but that is slightly deceiving according to those doing the research. The reason for this snoring is sometimes OSA, obstructive sleep apnea. One possible approach that has been studied is using the procedure, adenotonsillectomy, to treat this condition in obese teens and younger children.
The prospects for an obese child do not appear to be very promising for many reasons. When an obese child becomes an adult there is a long list of health problems and diseases that are at risk of. Can you reverse this obese condition?
We know that obese teens are more likely to become very obese adults by 16 times more than a normal teen. This is clearly not a good thing for those teens. As this starts to develop at an early age, they are looking at a very poor quality of living as an adult. Kids and young adults who suffer from this condition are often given the moniker “the walking wounded.” This is because the damage that has been done by obesity affects the body and the mind.
